The Great Reno Balloon Race is the largest free hot-air ballooning event in the world. During three days in early September, you can look up into the Reno skies and see a rainbow of hot air balloons soaring about.
Where: Reno, Nev. When: Early September The Great Reno Balloon Race has come a long way since its humble start in 1982 with just 20 balloons, now showcasing up to 100 balloons and attracting an average of 120,000 spectators each year.
The first balloon which carried passengers used hot air to obtain buoyancy and was built by the mans Josef and Etienne Montgolfier in Annonay, France in 1783: the first passenger flight was 19 September 1783, carrying a sheep, a duck, and a rooster.
